Privacy Policy
Last Updated: January 2026
Your privacy is important to us. It is Odutor's policy to respect your privacy regarding any information we may collect from you across our website, odutor.com, and other services we own and operate - including our student dashboard, teacher studio, live class sessions, guardian monitoring portal, and mobile applications.
Information We Collect
We only collect information about you if we have a reason to do so - for example, to provide our Services, to communicate with you, or to make our Services better. We collect information in three ways: if and when you provide information to us, automatically through operating our Services, and from outside sources.
Information you provide to us directly:
- Account information: Your name, email address, password, role (Student, Teacher, Guardian, or School Administrator), and profile photo when you register.
- Profile & academic data: Grade level, subjects of interest, school name, and class group memberships that you or your institution configure.
- Content you create: Assignments you submit, quiz responses, forum posts, live-class chat messages, and any files you upload to the platform.
- Payment information: If you subscribe to a paid plan, billing details are collected and processed by our third-party payment processor. Odutor never stores full card numbers on its own servers.
- Communications: Messages you send to our support team or other users through the in-platform chatbox.
Information we collect automatically:
- Usage data: Pages visited, features used, lessons opened, time spent on each module, assignment submission times, and live-class attendance records.
- Device & log data: IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URLs, and error logs.
- Cookies & local storage: Session tokens, preference settings, and analytics identifiers. See our Cookie Policy section below.
Information from third-party sources:
- If you sign in via Google or another OAuth provider, we receive your name, email, and profile picture from that provider.
- Schools that onboard their institution may provide us with a roster of student and teacher accounts. In that case, the school acts as the data controller for that information.
How We Use Information
We use the information we collect in various ways, including to:
- Provide, operate, and maintain our platform and live-class infrastructure.
- Personalise the learning experience - recommending courses, surfacing overdue assignments, and highlighting progress milestones.
- Give Guardians real-time visibility into their child's academic activity, including assignment completion rates, quiz scores, and attendance.
- Allow Teachers to analyse class performance, track individual student progress, and generate reports.
- Send transactional notifications - assignment reminders, deadline alerts, grade releases, and live-class invitations.
- Respond to support enquiries and resolve technical issues.
- Improve, test, and develop new platform features.
- Meet legal and regulatory obligations, and enforce our Terms of Service.
Legal Basis for Processing
In accordance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, Odutor processes personal data only where we have a clear lawful basis to do so. The lawful bases we rely on include the following:
Data Retention
We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide our Services. If you delete your account, we will delete or anonymise your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal or compliance purposes (such as billing records, which we keep for 7 years). Academic records associated with a school subscription may be retained for the duration of the school's contract.
Children's Privacy
Odutor is designed to be used by students of all ages, including minors, as part of supervised educational programmes. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without verifiable parental or guardian consent. If a school onboards students under 13, the school represents that it has obtained the necessary consents from parents or guardians. If you believe we have inadvertently collected information from a child under 13 without consent, please contact us immediately at reach@jaragroup.net.
Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal information:
- Access: Request a copy of the data we hold about you.
- Correction: Ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
- Deletion: Request that we delete your personal data (subject to legal retention obligations).
- Portability: Receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
- Objection: Object to certain types of processing, including direct marketing.
- Withdraw consent: Where processing is based on consent, withdraw it at any time without affecting prior processing.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at reach@jaragroup.net. We will respond within 30 days.
Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information against unauthorised access, loss, or misuse. These include HTTPS encryption for all data in transit, hashed password storage, role-based access controls so that, for example, one teacher cannot see another teacher's class data, and regular security audits. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If you believe your account has been compromised, please contact us immediately.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you by email or by placing a prominent notice on the platform at least 14 days before the change takes effect. Your continued use of Odutor after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
